The town's origin story is remarkable: in 1853, John Roebling, the visionary builder of the Brooklyn Bridge, purchased over 22,000 acres in Grundy County on speculation for around $1.25 per acre. Roebling later sold some of his land to Adolph Methfessel, who platted the town and donated portions for a school and churches. The name Reinbeck was given by the town's first postmaster, August Lusch, who named it after his hometown of Reinbeck (Rhinebeck) in Germany, needing to officially identify his post office and stagecoach depot so mail could be properly delivered.
