GigFire internet in Colton, South Dakota

Colton, a rural community in Minnehaha County with a population of 736, tells a story of agricultural innovation, entrepreneurship, and community perseverance. Named after J.E. Colton, a railroad official who homesteaded 160 acres in April 1878, the town transformed from a single family's vision into a thriving small community. In March 1879, the newlyweds moved onto their claim and built a one-room wooden shanty five blocks south of the current town center. Decades later, the relocation of businesses to higher ground created the thriving Main Street that serves Colton today. GigFire's internet service, delivered through our advanced network, brings reliable connectivity to Colton and supports the agricultural operations and small-town commerce that sustain this Minnehaha County community.

Colton's development centered on agricultural commerce and community cooperation. In 1897, J.E. Colton established the Taopi Creamery near the current town site. This facility became an immediate success with area farmers and catalyzed growth of supporting businesses and Main Street development. The creamery's success attracted merchants, professionals, and entrepreneurs who established the commercial foundation that defines modern Colton.

The community took decisive action to address flooding and drainage problems. Because the south end of the original town site was low, wet, and subject to flooding, business leaders moved the entire district to higher ground. John Colton and others platted the Third Addition and sold it to the South Dakota Central Land Company, of which John served as director. Local businessmen purchased lots and moved twenty buildings from the original site to 4th Street, east of the railroad tracks. This ambitious relocation project, completed in the early 1900s, created the stable town foundation that persists today.

The railroad's arrival became J.E. Colton's ultimate dream. In the summer of 1905, the first train steamed into the village, fulfilling years of vision and planning. The South Dakota Central Railroad transformed Colton from an isolated community into a connected commercial center, enabling agricultural products to reach broader markets and bringing manufactured goods and supplies to rural residents.

The Colton post office, established in 1898, provided essential communication services to residents and businesses. In 1901, John Colton founded "The Colton Courier" newspaper, which maintained publication for years. These communication institutions connected Colton residents to regional news, commerce, and community information—functions that GigFire's internet service continues today by providing reliable digital connectivity.
